- Berlin Schönefeld, 20 km far from Berlin's centre was the East Berlin airport and was until now especially used by low-cost companies. But it will become the largest airport of Berlin to handle some 22 to 25 M passengers. It will be then named Berlin Brandenburg International (BBI). It will accomodate some 150 units for retail, services and restaurants (120 of them under control) on 20.000 sqm. Investment : about 2 Billion € for the airport and some 600 M € for the train station to be built next to it. Works began in Sept 2006. Tempelhof and Tegel airports would be then definitively closed. But these closings are highly disputed as it appears that the BBI project could be already too "small" for the Berlin market. OFB and Projekta are about to develop a 100.000 sqm business area next to the new airport, in Kienberg, to accomodate hotels, retail and service. Initially scheduled in June 2012, then December 2014, the opening of BBI is now scheduled by 2018 for now....
