  • Kingston upon Thames is an affluent suburb, 12 miles to the southwest of Central London. There are strong transport links with the A3 and M3 close by, and the town sits between Heathrow and Gatwick Airports. There is a frequent train service to London Waterloo, a journey time of 25 minutes. The core population of the borough is 150,000 people. Over 300,000 people visit the town each year, and there are ¾ million people within a 15 minute drive time. The shopping population is predominantly ABC1 females between the ages of 25-54. The retail provision in the town has been ranked at 13 out of more than 110 towns in the UK, and in the London area, Kingston ranks second, behind the West End, and just ahead of Bromley. Retailers with a significant presence in the town include Marks & Spencer (2 stores), John Lewis, Bentalls, Bhs and Habitat. The primary shopping locations are the Bentall Centre, Clarence Street, and Market Place. Due to Kingston’s proximity to Central London and the relative cost savings that can be made, it is often used as a test bed for national and international retailers seeking to trial new formats or businesses. The Bentall Centre is the primary retail focus and the ground floor within the main mall area is the best location.
