Enschede is situated in the Twente region, east of the Netherlands and close to the German border. The city suffered in the 70's when most of the textile plants closed and Enschede became one of the poorest municipalities in the country. A large renovation plan of the city centre was then carried out to make it more attractive. The city centre is pedestrian and many former factories have been converted into apartments. Enschede also accomodates the Universiteit Twente (22.000 students). The retail actitivities benefit from the proximity to the border as many German citizens visit the city particularly between week-ends.
